Background:  This document summarizes information presented at a national ecumenical conference held at The Carter Center in 1989. This national meeting drew on the insights generated at The Carter Center’s 1984 conference, Closing the Gap, which made a strong case for addressing the social factors that contribute to health disparities. The 1989 conference included information on scientific, social, health care systems, the role of the faith community, theologies of healing among religious traditions, health ministries, religious responses to mental illness, and ways to mobilize religious communities.
