Background: This document marked an early effort by IHP to make the case for the importance of “religious health assets” to community health. At the time the document was written, a number of non-profit health systems (many of which were faith-based) in the US were being sold to for-profit corporations. In this report, IHP argued for the importance of responding to this historic shift among health systems in the US to not only provide funds to provide indigent care in the new for-profit facilities but also to leverage the distinctive resources of those faith-based systems to address health disparities and public health initiatives.
